In December 2025, GEO-Academy’s partner, PHT, recently received students from primary schools to a technical college for an exciting educational excursion in Austria.
The excursion was guided by two experienced forest educators, who shared expert knowledge on forest ecology, challenges in forest management, and the impacts of climate change. Students were able to connect real-world observations with theory, gaining a deeper understanding of the environment.
A central focus of the activity was the educational use of online maps, allowing students to explore forest health, infestation risks, and regional variations using digital geodata. By linking on-site experiences with digital mapping tools, students developed both spatial and digital competences appropriate to their age and school level, while learning about sustainable forest management in a hands-on way.
This excursion demonstrates how digital tools and field experiences can work together to create engaging and meaningful learning opportunities for students of all ages.
